Your Home Is An Investment. Treating It Like One?
MSC Marketing
by Dean Hartman on October 7, 2010
There is a pendulum when we look at real estate. On one side is Real Estate as an Investment. On the other is Real Estate as a Home – a place to raise a family, have the pride of homeownership, etc.In the house price frenzy of a few years ago, people looked at their home almost purely as an investment with constant growth. Many refinanced their home multiple times extracting equity to buy a lifestyle beyond their means. Many saw fantastic annual rates of return on their investment. The pendulum swung way too far. We forgot the house as a home. (More …)

New Lead-Safe Practices to Increase Home-Remodeling Costs
MSC Marketing
By Duane Marsteller
RISMEDIA, July 31, 2010—(MCT)—Local contractors say a controversial new federal safety rule will increase home-remodeling costs in Manatee County, Florida, but by how much is a matter of debate. Beginning October 1, 2010, contractors will be required to take additional precautions when renovating structures where children could be exposed to lead dust from old paint. The new “lead-safe” practices apply to work on homes, day-care centers and schools built before 1978, when lead paint was banned for residential use because of health risks.Contractors say they will comply with the new regulations but will pass the cost of compliance onto customers. Top 10 Must-Have Features in Today’s New Homes
Beth Ward
By Steve Kerch
RISMEDIA, January 25, 2010—(MCT)—Americans want smaller houses and they are willing to strip some of yesterday’s most popular rooms—such as home theaters—from them in order to accommodate changing lifestyles, consumer experts told audiences at the International Builders Show.
“This is a traumatic time in this country and the future isn’t something we’re 100% sure about now either. What’s left? The answer for most home buyers is authenticity,” said Heather McCune, director of marketing for Bassenian Lagoni Architects in Park Ridge, Ill. Buyers today want cost-effective architecture, plans that focus on spaces and not rooms and homes that are designed ‘green’ from the outset,” she said. The key for home builders is “finding the balance between what buyers want and the price point.” (More …)

Around the Home – 10 Steps to an Earth-Friendly Yard
MSC Marketing
RISMEDIA, May 8, 2010—(MCT)—Want to make the planet a little greener? Look no farther than your own backyard—or, for that matter, your own front yard. The U.S. is home to 32 million acres of lawn, or enough to cover the 100 largest U.S. cities almost twice, says Owen Dell, author of Sustainable Landscaping for Dummies. Lawns suck up 270 billion gallons of water a week and burn 800 million gallons of (mower) gas a year. And then there are the pesticides and the chemical-based fertilizers.
“I use this analogy,” Dell says. “If you take care of yourself—exercise, eat right, don’t drink too much alcohol, don’t use drugs—you’re going to have a much better chance of staying healthy. Similarly, if you keep the landscape healthy, whether it’s the lawn or anything else, you’re going to have fewer problems.”
How do you break free of the high-maintenance lawn care cycle? Drawing from interviews with Dell, Tom Christopher, editor of The New American Sustainable Garden (due out next year) and Annie Spiegelman, author of Talking Dirt assembled a list of basic tips to get you started. (More …)

'Cool' roofs – a hot idea?

This hidden-in-plain-sight upgrade can mean saving on your electricity bills and enjoying a much more comfortable home during hot summers.By Christopher Solomon of MSN Real Estate
Hanson owns a home in Canyon Lake, Calif. “The average temperatures out here are well in the 100s all summer long, so our (electricity) bills were $800 a month. It was pretty outrageous. We could not cool the house down. We’d run the air conditioner
all the time.”A big problem was the original concrete tile roof, which sat on the rafters and radiated that heat right into the house.
Then Hanson and her husband swapped out that roof for a so-called “cool roof” of green tiles on their 3,000-square-foot house. (They made other improvements, too, such as upgrading the home’s windows and adding attic insulation
.)“We also put a swimming pool in, and even with that swimming pool, with the filter running, our bills in the summer are probably 200 bucks a month less,” she says.
The best part, she says, is “my house is comfortable all the time.” (More …)
